Subject: Thank you to Spain for its increased commitment to the Global Fund and leadership in Global Health
The Developing Country NGO (DCNGO) Delegation to the Board of the Global Fund to Fight AIDS, tuberculosis and malaria warmly welcomes Spain’s announcement of an increased pledge of €145 million to the Global Fund’s 8th Replenishment, made at the Fourth International Conference on Financing for Development (FfD4) in Sevilla.
We extend our sincere appreciation to the Government of Spain for this important commitment—an 11.5% increase from its previous pledge. In the context of tightening fiscal constraints and competing global priorities, this increased investment is a powerful demonstration of Spain’s leadership and deep commitment to global health equity.
We also commend Spain for hosting the FfD4 conference and ensuring that global health was a key part of the agenda. This inclusion reflects an understanding that health is not only a human right but also a foundation for sustainable development and global economic stability.
Spain’s early pledge stands as a strong signal of leadership from within the European Union, and we hope it will catalyse further support from other Member States. At a time when the world faces intersecting crises—from ongoing pandemics to emerging threats—robust investment in the Global Fund is essential to protect health gains, address inequities, and ensure countries are better prepared for future health emergencies.
As the 13th largest donor to the Global Fund, Spain continues to play an important role in advancing global health and multilateral cooperation. It is also a fundamental partner to those in Latin America and the Caribbean who still rely on the Global Fund’s support to achieve key health objectives and reach the hardest-to-reach, ensuring that no one is left behind. The launch of Spain’s new global health strategy and its renewed commitment to development cooperation underscore the country’s growing role as a champion of collective action and solidarity.
We thank Spain once again for its leadership, its increased investment, and its vision of a healthier, more equitable world. This pledge gives hope—and sets a powerful example—for what shared responsibility and global cooperation can achieve.
With gratitude,
Cecilia Senoo, Yolanda Paul
